COOL SITE! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Jill!
It really looks like a fascinating site - but I get a "Not available in your area" message when I click Play! I'm glad to see that it's not just 'cause I'm in the States. I have written to them - waiting on an answer to my "How come?"
Thanks for sharing!
Bright Blessings ~ Kharmin
Please post when you get an answer, 'cause I got the same message. And how do they know what "our area" is. LOL
Jean ~ Here's the response that was in my InBox this morning ~
"Hi Karen, and thanks for your e-mail.
"Unfortunately, due to rights restrictions out of our control, the
programmes in the BBC Archive Project collections are only viewable from within the UK.
"We do appreciate that there is a wider audience for this, and that this
might be frustrating for non-UK visitors to the site. It's simply that
we'd have to pay more money to free up the programmes for worldwide
release than if we restricted the availability to the UK. Additionally, as the programmes were funded by UK license fee payers, our first
responsibility is to the UK audience.
"You'll find many companies restrict their online audio-visual content - such as NBC in the USA and CBC in Canada.
"You should, however, be able to view the documents in our various
collections.
"Regards, The BBC Archive webteam"
Makes me pout, too.
They can tell what "your area" is by the IP address from the computer. I can't explain any details, and may even have that bit sideways - that's just the "Monkey see-Monkey say" answer (wry grin!)
Annie ~ can you see the videos, too, from Wisconsin? Or was your comment on the site in general?
I don't know that there's anything we can do to change this, but more letters from more people certainly wouldn't hurt ... Hmmm, I wonder if any of the Archives can be accessed through the BBC-America website?

It was nice of them to respond, and so quickly. I do understand what they are saying, but it would have been nice if they had put a note that the videos were unavailable to some countries outside the UK before we clicked on it and were disappointed. :(
I know they can determine the country of origin by the IP address, but I always wondered how they can stop the flow of information. Some countries do not allow the internet from other countries. How do they do that? Guess it isn't always the World Wide Web. Oh, well.
We are sew-ers and demand to see anything sewing related! There! (Howver, don't think that's gonna get us the viewing rights any time soon!)
ahh - I'm afraid you're preaching to the choir here! A notice would be a good thing, though!
But ... maybe if you write to THEM, and a lot of other folks do, too, they'd get the hint?
Or ... even better, maybe Taunton/Threads could make some kind of arrangement with the BBC Archives - so we could view them as links *from here*, but not generally available? Just a thought ...
The site came through loud and clear in W. Canada.
You mean we will have to move to enjoy the video? LOL
