Best lining material for a remake project in rayon?

syskrin | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

I have a very pretty red, floor length dress which I have worn exactly twice in about 10 years.
I want to remake the dress into a sweeping skirt, which I will be able to wear much more often.

The dress is made of 100% rayon (is not lined) and specifies dry cleaning only.

I want to add a lining to the skirt.

But what type of material would be most suitable for the lining, given that the dress fabric is rayon and requires dry cleaning?

Many Thanks for any tips or comments on this dilemma.

    Lining for syskrin's rayon dress

I'm guessing the dress was RTW because you mention a care label.  Though some sewsits use these.  How experienced are you?   This undertaking can be fraught with challenges.

if you go forward with your thought,  MO,  a like fabric would be the better.  Finding a red rayon would depend on your location.   For a neat design feature you might find a printed rayon that would work.

To my knowing rayon varies in quality.  I'd say this would factor in to your project.

Yes, the dress was bought RTW. I bought it many years ago (for a wedding). I can see now that over the years hanging in my closet the fabric has stretched - the dress has become a little longer!

It has a lovely deep red color with a print of roses. I would love to be able to turn it into something (a skirt) that I could actually wear more often.

I am not worried about making and sewing the skirt, I do have several skirts that I really like, and I plan to base the skirt I want to make on one of them.

My dilemma is rather the matching of the rayon fabric with a suitable material for a lining.

Given that the fabric requires dry cleaning the lining would need to stand up to being dry cleaned.

        Yes the dress was bought

I would consider Bemberg.  It is a rayon fabric used for linings and is soft and would probably drape and move like your skirt.
