Bias Binding fabric requirements

Lyda | Posted in General Discussion on

Is there a formula for estimating fabric required for bias binding?

If there is a formula, I think it would be rather random. I have made lots and lots of bias bindings, for furniture, pillows, clothing, etc. For smaller projects I lay the fabric on my cutting board which has bias lines and then measure the widths and the lengths to figure out how many strips I need. For large projects I use the bias/fold/tube/sew/cut method. It uses a lot of fabric, but when the thing is sewn together it is possible to measure the length of the bias tape (tedious, but possible).

Try a quilting reference book or website. Quilters often make double fold bias binding to cover quilt edges. The charts tell you how many inches of binding which will finish at a certain width (perhaps 1/4" or 1/2") you can cut from a certain amount of 40-44" wide fabric. Double fold binding is also called French fold binding. If you want single fold binding you would probably need about 1/2 as much because you won't be sewing on a double thickness of binding. I had a copy of a booklet called "Patchwork Without Mathwork" that I used for estimating how much fabric to buy/cut. Good luck.

thank you so much midnitesewer. As I didn't have any quilting books I found a formula online on ezinearticles.com after doing a "bias binding calculations" query.
      thanks again
