bleach!

Mortimores | Posted in Fiber Arts on

Have just discovered Threads and thought it looked great until I saw the piece on using bleach to create patterened fabric..I wouldn’t use chemicals at all but that’s not the point..The article seems to be unaware that bleach is a chemical?? It goes on to mention other chemicals in the technique although still talking about chemical free process. Such a shame as otherwise a really interesting and informative online magazine

Hello, the author's standpoint is that most controlled discharge or dyeing processes require substances that may be more highly toxic than household bleach, which will remove dye. Bleach can be handled safely with care, and the bleach is neutralized at the end of the process. I do think that the original cutlines for the article suggest that chemicals are not used in the process at all, but I will adjust them. Thank you for your interest in Threads - we have hundreds of techniques and methods for you to discover.
