My all time favorite sewing book is "Make Your Own Dress Patterns" by Adele P. Margolis. It is, unfortunately, out of print, but I have seen copies available at http://www.alibris.com from time to time.
The beauty of Margolis' book is that it is directed toward the home-sewer. There are simple exercises which are done with quarter scale slopers (which are included in the book). This book is very easy to understand, conversational in tone, and has sound, sensible information. Be on the lookout for a copy!
