breast cancer attire

kuecker3 | Posted in General Discussion on

A friend is going to have a double mastectomy.  I read it is helpful to have sally bags and shirts with pockets inside for the drains.  Does anyone know where to get a pattern or picture.

Are there any other garments that would be good to have?

I had a mastectomy last year and when I got home from the hospital, I wore an old cotton shirt of my husbands. The drainage tubes came out my sides and the tubes were enclosed in the bandage which also held the drainage bulbs. They look like small plastic  grenades.  Within three weeks, my drainage tubes were removed so I  would not go to the trouble to make clothes for three weeks unless you just want to.

A man's shirt works great. You don't feel like going out, so there is no need for a lot of clothes. I had lots of swelling and fluid, which eventually went down, so if you are planning to do some sewing for your friend, don't expect a continuous good fit. I kept changing sizes until I was well healed.

Good luck to your friend. She has a tough road ahead but with God's help and some good friends she will be fine.
