Can anyone tell me what this stuff is?

CyndiL | Posted in General Discussion on

I came across a reference to a material (cloth?) called “buckrum” and it was being recommended as a good base for beading wall hangings and tapestries.  Has anyone heard of this, know what it is or whether you can just buy it at a local fabric store?

Thanks~~

    Shalom Mazeltov,

buckram is often used as an interfacing... it is also used in millenery. It can be fine like muslin or very course. with water and glue it can even be molded to make very stiff hat shapes or elizabethan collars.

If you can't find it at your fabric store, try a place that sells upholstery fabric. you can also find it at a hat supply store or a place that sells theatrical materials.

It is also used in the book binding industry, Hope this helps.

      Hi Diane~~

Thank you, yes~~that's exactly what I wanted to know. I'll bet that the fabric store I visit will have it. It's pretty big, but not close by, so I wanted to find out if this would be useful stuff before taking the road trip!

      Thanks for your help :-)
