Cat Habitat

Crafty_Manx | Posted in Patterns on

I made a fabric and foam house for my cat (Simplicity pattern 9004, the one that looks like a house).  It’s basically 1/2″ foam sandwiched between 2 layers of fabric.  The problem is that the sides of the house have caved inwards and it no longer stands up straight (due in part to the cat pouncing the roof several times).  I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what I could brace the four vertical corners with to add stability, but still have enough flex that the cat isn’t going to hurt herself when she inevitably pounces the roof (so wooden dowels are out).  If anyone has an idea please let me know.

As far as the pattern goes it was easy to understand, the hardest part is forcing foam through the sewing machine (go figure).  Everyone who has seen this house loves it and I want to make another as a gift for my Aunt.

Check this site, they have flexible wires and even some cat paraphernalia patterns using them.

If you made a frame out of narrouw PVC pipe (think plumbing) - it even has connecting pieces - you could make a frame that had verticals and horizontals with connectors. Then the top would act as more of a hammock.

Another thought Re: PVC support. If you could figure out how to utilize hook and loop tape - like Velcro - to attach it, the whole thing could be washed, too.

That's a good idea, and would be sturdy too!  Thanks :-)
