Chanel suit

carolfresia | Posted in Photo Gallery on

This is a great-looking Chanel suit made by Nancy. I’m going to try posting it since she’s not managing to get through to do it.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Hey, Nancy, looking good! I'm going to post instructions in the other topic where you asked for them...

      Dear Carol,

Thanks for posting it.  Nothing happens when I click the purple button.  I'll sit down and e-mail Mark with all the pertinent info.  Thanks for passing on the problem.  There are times that only a photo will do and since I have a new digital camera it is all the easier to do, or should be!

If nothing happens when you click on the purple "attach Files" button I'm almost certain the problem is with a pop-up stopper on your machine. Try it again while holding down the Control button on your keyboard and see if the window opens up. Or conversely, disable your pop-up stopper for the time being.

Nancy, It's simply beautiful!!  It's so nice to see it done after all the postings about it - you created a masterpiece.  Karin

      Dear Karen,

Thanks so much.  I really appreciated all the input from everyone.  At Alex's graduation I  saw a woman wearing a genuine Chanel jacket, one I'd seen in Vogue and the NY Times.  After the ceremonies the same woman was holding it over her arm and I could see the lining and it was sewn with out a jump hem, almost to the hem edge.  Do they still quilt them?  It would still have to have a facing, as it was  the same style as mine, not a cardigan jacket.  One of these days I'll have to go into Chanel and actually look at a jacket.

Great job!  I have several Chanel jackets I want to make for fall, and I'm getting ready to go into the city (NYC) tomorrow to snoop shop.

You asked whether they still quilted the jackets, a la Claire Shaeffer's instructions.  I have not seen any quilted in recent years.  In fact, I asked sewing teacher Sandra Betzina this question at a class this spring, and she said no. I believe when Coco Chanel began making her famous design, it was more out of a sweater knit type of fabric than the open weave loose wools popular today, and attaching the lining to the garment fabric allowed fluid movement and the entire jacket could be treated as a single piece of fabric.

The one thing I do think that remains quite standard on any Chanel jacket (or any European jacket) is pulling the armhole high up under the armpit, which gives a much nicer line to the garment.  Sandra even has instructions for how to do this in one of her books, Power Sewing Step-By-Step, page 206.

Thankyou for the compliments.  When I was at Alex's graduation there was a woman wearing one of the Chanel jackets  that had been in the magazines and afterwards I saw the inside hem when she had it hanging over her arm.  The lining hem was sewn to the bottom o;f the jacket without a jump hem.  There was also stitiching visible at the bottom i;n contrasting thread, white on a black lining.  I was tryinto to figure out how it was done so that the lining that the jacket didn't pull up. Are you going to look in at the Chanel boutique?  Do let us know what you find.  I want to make another jacket for the fall.

Nancy the trim on the jacket is really gorgeous. Good job!
