My grandaughter wears plus sizes and I have not been able to find a simple dress pattern for her. She is 8 years old and I want some that looks like an 8 year old. I hope someone can help me find a resource for plus size childrens patterens. Thanks

Dear Granny,
You might be able to do an easy alteration by purchasing a multi-sized pattern and tracing off the width from a larger size and the length from a smaller size--but measure the pattern (and your granddaughter) first: I haven't found children's pattern sizes to be very consistent. Another option you might consider is pattern-drafting software. You can create a custom-sized pattern by entering the measurements of your granddaughter, selecting style options, and printing out a pattern. An upcoming issue of Threads will review these programs, focusing on how they work for women's clothing, but the article will also contain contact information so you can find out more about packages that include children's clothes. Martha Pullen has a couple of collections that are reasonably priced (about $25, I think) with various dresses and playclothes options you can print out in the required size. Go to http://www.marthapullen.com and look for "Click & Sew" in the Patterns category.
