Cristening suit for a baby boy

Sewdreamy | Posted in General Discussion on

My first grandson’s Christening is coming up–he will be six months old when he’s Christened–and I have sufficient off-white silk I have saved for five years from my daughter-in-law’s wedding dress that I made to make a wonderful little suit for him to wear, but there really just isn’t any pattern that I have found that fits the bill.  I want it to be special and beautiful, but not feminine.  I would like to do a little piece of smocking in the front of the shirt or bib or insets in a jacket.  I want the shirt or neckline of a jumpsuit to have a peter pan collar, perhaps with a narrow satin cording.  And I know I saw a really neat little boys hat somewhere with smocking, but very little-boyish with a brim.  Anyone have any ideas where I might find patterns–I can make my own, but I’m so short of time and I would really like a basis to start with that I can then add my own ideas to.  I am not sure whether it should be a suit with a nice little shirt, or a jumpsuit.  A nice quilt or blanket would be a great addition too–it will be October when he’s baptised–but it has to be fast to make (did I mention that I work full time?).  I would welcome your ideas.

Check out http://www.handmades.com Their pattern section has nearly every heirloom pattern available and quite a few that would be suitable for a boy's christening suit. Also check out http://www.countrybumpkin.com.au Many of the back issues of Australian Smocking and Embroidery have christening suits. One I particularly like is in the African issue (can't remember the number) and features long pants and a shirt with smocking. They call them shepherd suits there.

Thanks.  What great sites!  I ordered a couple of patterns.  I still haven't found the hat I saw, but I think it may have been in one of my old magazines.
