I picked up a great looking casual suit pattern, Butterick 3778. It has vertical bust darts coming up from the waistline but they have a right angle bend 1-2″ below the bust point. Obviously this adds to the fitting challenge because you must clip into the fabric at the point of the bend. So fitting ahead is a necessity .
Has anyone had to deal with this? I like to be able to fine-tune fit during construction and don’t see that as a viable option here. Also, what’s the reasoning for this particular dart design? I’m curious!

That sounds something like the s-shaped dart in the latest issue of Threads which did require fitting ahead but it made a huge difference in the way the garment fit. Worth trying, I think. rjf
