deconstructed garments

CatPark | Posted in General Discussion on

I am trying to find information on making deconstructed garments, ie exposed seams, pieced garments, etc., and am having difficulty finding any. These types of finishes are in the stores, why can’t I find any information on sewing them? Help!

Clothing is making a flat piece of fabric fit a body and the deconstructed garments are based on the same principles of patternmaking and fit that the more standard clothing is. The choices of seaming are endless and the choices of how to create the fabric is endless too so those are easy places for personal invention. This probably isn't exactly the answer you are hoping for but a lot of deconstruction is variation on the theme and is not a different animal completely. Just try whatever you feel like, see how it looks, imitate something that interests you - and study the basic theory of fitting the body.

Thanks, Elizabeth, I think you're right, just have to let my creativity flow and not think of what's the "right way" to do things.
