Delancy Street

mygaley | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Shopped garment district new york city last summer:  only thing wrong was so  many choices, it took too long.  My favorite store was a junky looking place named Material World;  Some fine fabrics, some junk, but oh, the prices.  It is listed in the Manhatten phone book.  Threads Feb/Mar 2001 had an article “Shopping for Fabric in New York”.

Also there is a discussion line about this article at number 2572.l  Garment district is well known on maps, tourist guides, etc.  I found the local people very helpful and friendly.  Shopping in New York was my lifetime dream trip–happy hunting.

One, most of the best stores are in the garment district, between 8th and 9th Avenue starting near Penn station and going up to about 40th or so. Walking distance or one subway stop on the 7 or 8th avenue lines and then walk downtown. I like Mood and Paron best, both in the phone book. But it depends on what you want. I go there when I don't have a lot of time. Havae lots of fun, and remember if your packages are just too heavy, most places will ship for you.

don't bother with delancy street - the quality is spottier. you will get more mileage out of your adventure in the fabric dsitrict that is between penn station and times square primarily between 7th and 8th. if you want to do trimmings you will want to walk a couple of blocks east.

you should know that is you want higher end fabrics...rosen and chadick has moved to the north east corner of 40th and 7th..second floor, and b+J is now on 38th and 7th also north east corner and also on the second floor.

chic fabrics on 39th is selling wonderful stuff and at nearly silly prices. if you have no aversion to buying RTW...you may want to visit SSS sample sale on 36th near 8th ( 2nd floor - they have a big sign dwnstairs) they often have clothing you don't usually see in the regular stores...with lovely details. sometimes the prices are just amazing..and sometimes not. I once bought my DD 8 pieces of clothing for the regular price of just one of those garments.
