Deserted Island Sewing Supplies

Elaray | Posted in Talk With Us on

Let’s borrow a premise that was used in the music media — The Deserted Island List. Magazines like Rolling Stone would ask readers what CDs they would want if they were stranded on a deserted island. Let’s play the Sewing Version.

So ….. you are stranded on a deserted island. By some miracle, you have your sewing machine and/or serger, a supply of fabric & thread, and a pre-packaged sewing kit (including scissors, tape measure, pins and a tomato pincushion). What 3 items (no more than three) would you add to this list? I can be a book, a notion — anything you can’t imagine sewing without. In this game, creativity counts. Have fun!

An iron, a tailor's ham, and a seam gauge. I think!

well I'm assuming that there's electricity since the sewing machine and the serger work so I'd also want:

    iron
    textile paints
laptop computer with satellite internet capability

An iron, my seam ripper, and my reading glasses are absolutely essential, but if those were already included in the basics, I'd ask for a good source of classical music, a full length mirror, and a shady place to sit!

Hahaha! Good question. I would want:

    my magnifier lamp,
    sunglasses,
and a cute cabana boy to bring me tall cool drinks while I sew

I really hope this island is off the coast of Greece!! I think I would have to have a supply of laces and trims, beads and iron-on bonding material.Just imagine not being interrupted by the mundain necesseties of life for however long it took to "rescue" you! This is good day-vacation material!(day-dreaming!)

    1.  my very best gingher shears

    2.  clear elastic

    3.  the fore-mentioned "support person" to answer the phone (I think getting away from it is hopeless), supply drinks, meals, shoulder massages, etc., who comes with his own ironing equipment to press while I sew!

By the way, when I have agreed to do something at the last minute or for free I always have the other party agree to be my support person for one day, or the time the project takes, whichever is shorter.  You'd be surprised how much non-sewers can help!

Wow! What a good idea! Even a trade of service for service would be a bonus...I'm going to remember this suggestion.
