Does anyone know a way to distress denim (jeans, jackets) in the washing machine? I am trying to fade and soften several items but washing and fabric softeners don’t seem to be doing the trick.

In the 1970's i remember adding bleach to the wash
to soften and fade too new jeans - in the ancient
days before pre-washed jean
*What about using a dye remover (like Rit)? Might be a little less harsh on the fabric but have the same effect as bleach.
*Somewhere here on Threads Online you may find instructions on a method that is used by costumers in Hollywood. It involves washing the garments with very hot water, bleach, and rock salt. I'm sorry I don't know exactly where to find this. Anyone?
*In Readers Reply P. 14 of Threads No. 82 is a method for aging denim. Sounds like it will work.
*Back in the late 60's early 70's i use to take new jeans outside with a friend an each take an end an rub/drag back an forth over a huge rock.. thn come in an bleach an hottest water .....that worked pretty good
*Ritz Dyes actually has a product especially for fading denim. It should be available where you buy your dye.
*I think I saw the answer to this on thathomesite.com or sewingworld.
