Double Knit Fabric – 13 oz

Kathysew | Posted in General Discussion on

Does any one have a source for a 13 oz double knit. This is a heavy weight double knit suitable for nice pants. In the past I have purchased the brand noted below, but can no longer find this. I am looking for black and navy.

Hussar Ponte – 50/50 poly cotton
double knit 13 oz

Thanks

    Nancy's Notions http://www.nancysnotions.com has this

    "Ponte—for jackets, bottoms, dresses. 12 oz. weight. 50% cotton/50% polyester. 62" wide. (Retail $9.99/yd.)"

Navy is on sale for $5.99 now. I think it is what is left over from last fall, not something she carries all the time.

Thanks for much for your response. I called Nancy's notions and they do not have any ponte at this time. Any other ideas. I used to get this from a store in Racine Wis. and they can't get this any more.
I just love this fabric for pants because of the weight of the knit.
      Thanks again!

I just did a google.com search for hussar ponte as you described and it came up on http://www.greatcopy.com .  Have you ever tried http://www.emmaonesock.com ?  She frequently has double knits and goes to NYC all the time to buy.  Also, have you tried http://www.voguefabricsstore.com ?  Those are my suggestions.  Good luck!  M A

MA - thanks for your response. Great Copy is where I got this fabric from for years and the last time I called they don't carried fabric anymore. I was told that all this fabric is now being made in China and is not very good quality. As far as your google seach - I have tried this but when I put in "hussar ponte" I got "no matches". This is a good idea - could you let me know how you are entering "hussar ponte" I must be doing something different from what you are doing. Once again thanks for your help!!

Have you asked http://www.gstreetfabrics.com  ?  They had some material I couldn't find elsewhere.  Good luck, M A

MA, I live in Chicago and have always wanted to go to G Street fabrics.
I actually had that chance about a month ago when I was out to Maryland to see my sister. They had a nice selection of knits but not the heavy double knit. I did send a email to emmaonesock, on your suggestion, and she has offer to send me out samples of what she has. Thanks for all your help!

One other thought is Joyce's Fabrics in Morrisville,NY at [email protected]

She also carries ponte but I'm not sure if she has yours or not.  She is quick and advertises in Threads, Sew News and sends swatches if you request them.  Very nice lady.  Good luck, M A (see below for message I got from Joyce of Joyce's Fabrics and the message I got from your source for ponte)

p.s. I did a search for Joyce's Fabrics under Google and found another neat web site if you have time and patience, and it is an alphabetical listing of fabric stores.

            http://www.lyonslpgas.com/sewscape/alphabet2.html

The double knits I have in stock are listed on page 12 - Item #14 of the spring/summer 2005 list.  The cotton/poly DK I have in stock are listed as item #14-B - turquoise, winter white and red @ $5.98/yd.  Also check out the  ponte micro knits listed as item #14-F - 46% rayon/46% poly/8% lycra - navy, charcoal gray and plum @ $7.50/yd.Joyce, Joyce's Fabrics, Morrisville, NY 13408

The mill that made the ponte doubleknit is no longer in business.  Thereare other knits that are similiar.  Try contacting Stretch and Sew inBloomington MN.  They have a variety of fabrics. Their number is952-884-7321 or you can visit them at http://www.stretchandsewmn.com.

This is the answer I received from Vogue Fabrics which must be in your area.  I am not a manufacturer, but it is interesting to note that the wholesale division might have sources.  Your best bet will be with emmaonesock or with Joyce's Fabrics which I sent in a previous message.  Linda Podietz of emmaonesock has lovely Jasco knits which might be a suitable substitute for you.  She will send swatches just like Joyce.

"Sorry, we don't have any poly/cotton knits.  If you are a manufacturer and need larger quantities (100 yards or more) you can try our wholesale division - they might have some sources.  their number is 847-864-1270"

            Again, good luck, M A
