I don't normally post here, but I just happened to notice your question and couldn't help replying. About a year ago I purchased Draping For Apparel Design, by Helen Joseph-Armstrong. It is an excellent book, but it is pricey. I think I paid about $90 for it since it is an actual textbook used in design schools. I'm not much of a draper (yet!), but the book is very clear and concise, with mostly simple designs. I also have Patternmaking for Fashion Design by the same author, and have explored that book much more thoroughly. Both books are definitely worth the money, although there are a few editing errors in the patternmaking one. I think the books really compliment each other, because they are written by the same author and have similiar layouts, but are approached using different methods (flat pattern-drafting versus draping). It has been really helpful for me to understand the anatomy of a pattern first by drafting it, and then trying to recreate it on my dressform.
Hope this was helpful.
Thanks, I've seen those books on amazon and wondered about them. I have also found a book from italy. Talk about pricey! It is $307 but the index looks as though it is for those who would like to take a course but don't have access to one. I am still considering.
Thanks for your reply
An excellent book, used at the Fashion Institute of Technology (State University, New York) is Draping for Fashion Design by Hilde Jaffe and Nurie Relis, 4th Edition. I don't recall the price--I think it's about $70.00 new, but you might be able to get a used on at a substantial discount at Amazon or other discount bookstore online. Z
This is a good draping book. (Draping for Fashion Design) It was my college text book in the mid 80's at the San Francisco Fashion Design school I attended. Easy to read with excellent illustrations. My version might be the first print..(c from 1973). Seek used books for this one.Edited 3/7/2008 9:21 am ET by Beavette
