If you are planning to become a designer, you'll probably need quite a bit of instruction in all the different aspects of design and construction. Wait until you're in a class before buying a dummy or any other tools, so that the instructor can explain what you need to look for and where you can get it.
The dress dummies offer to the public are very different from those used in industry and probably will frustrate you and not help you learn the most efficient methods of designing or construction.
If you want to buy a used one to decorate a sewing studio or to play around with till you get a professional dummy, check out thrift stores, craiglist, or freecycling groups; don't spend a lot of money on an inferior version!
thanks! will do just dat.
You were given great advice ... I just have one thing to add. If you do end up purchasing a dress form inexpensively, just make sure it is a size small - then you can pad it to fit the person you are making something for. That way, it will be much more versatile, especially if you are planning on clothing design.
