elastic for smocking

anniesews | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Hello,

I am just beginning to try smocking using my new sewing machine and I wondering how long elastic thread lasts before it stretches out??

Annie, I've been smocking for years and I have never used elastic.  I have a machine that pleats the fabric, and I smock by hand.  Some smocking stitches are very elastic and others are not.

Wouldn't elastic thread last as long as other elastic-- and be conditional on how it is washed and stored?  Hot water and chlorine wear elastic down, as does sunlight.
