embroidering georgette,before or afte…

I hope someone can help me figure out what to do next. I have cut out an evening gown for my daughter. It is a white drapey style and fabric…..geogette. I have a suitable lining and underlining, but I want to do some machine embroidery on this gown, but I wonder if I need to have it underlined first. Would the underlining cause puckering in the embroidery designs? I am planning on using a spray stiffner first and then a stablizer in the hoop. But again, I am just not sure if I should be underlining before I embroider. What would be best? CB

I have embroidered on chiffon, not georgette, but I think the technique would be similar. I have taught FME and written a book about it. Are you talking about free-motion or automatic machine embroidery? I would not underline first. I recommend using 2 or 3 layers of wash-away stabilizer underneath and one on top also for free-motion embroidery, which is always done in a hoop. It can be snipped or pulled away with care and any shreds left may be dissolved with a damp cloth or a damp Q-tip. Avalon would also work well. On sheer, fragile fabric be careful not to allow thread to pile up too thickly. MariLynn
