equipment reviews

scrubble4 | Posted in Feedback on Threads on

Hi:  I like so much about Threads and have the issues back to the beginning.  There is an area that I think you could help sewers with that I find very few articles on and cannot seem to find on your web site here.  That is the area of equipment reviews.  I rely on Cooks Illustrated for reviews on cooking and baking equipment and have seldom gone wrong in following their advice.  Amazon of course also offers feedback.  However, Amazon reviewers have so many criteria for their reviews it is sometimes difficult to sort through to the ones useful to me.  If Threads could have a regular equipment review as opposed to just telling about new items, it would be very helpful.  Everything from sewing machines and sergers to rotary cutters, pins and measuring tapes.  I know that means you are going to have to step up to the plate to say one advertiser may be better than another but in explaining the different strengths of items readers could also draw their own conclusions of what is best for them.  I think your integrity over the years has been your commitment to sewers and not advertisers.  Cook’s Illustrated makes it very clear why they are choosing one over another.  It is so helpful.  Recently I have been shopping for scissors.  I finally decided on Gingher after much messing about on the web.  I am still not completely clear on the manufacturing process/content of the scissors, their longevity etc.  I remember old threads on Gatherings which praised these scissors and I am influenced as much by that as by other articles.  I am also looking for a magnifying light for both my machine and hand sewing.  Here I feel like a bouncing ball jostling between articles that tell but don’t review or evaluate.

You have many experienced tailors, seamstresses and novice sewers who would probably all be pleased to give you their viewpoints on different brands of a chosen piece of equipment according to your chosen criteria.  Then you could bring to the fore the many contributing editors opinions.  These could be presented as different categories for a common list of criteria.  It would be so useful.  In these economic times we all think three times before buying items small or large.  Also, sometimes in second hand stores a bargain may be available if we knew in advance.

Thanks for your consideration of this request.  Scrubble4

    Agree great idea.

I think pattern review also  has reviews of machines and other equipment.

Reviews are a good idea. I depend on them for information about equipment for my kitchen. I would like to see reviews for sewing equipment.
