Fabric/Button shops in LA

Stalindsay | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

Hi All:

I am visiting my daughter at UCLA next week. I would love to visit as many nice fabric shops in the area that I can. Does anyone have any “must see” names for me?

Thanks

When you say "nice fabric shop" are you talking about upscale, nice to look at or good fabric inexpensive? Also what type of fabric are you looking for?

In the upscale, nice to look at range, there is a shop called F&S Fabrics at 10629 West Pico that has fabulous fabrics that are quite expensive but lovely to look at and touch. Be sure to check out their home decor store across the street.

If you are a quilter, I would recommend the Cotton Shop at 1922 Artesia Boulevard in Redondo Beach. Their fabric is on the high end for cottons, but their selection is great.

If you are looking for less expensive fabric, I recommend the garment district at 9th and Maple/Wall in downtown Los Angeles.

Michael Levine (920 S. Maple) has got a large selection of cotton prints, rich fabrics, wools...pretty much everything. But they are one of the more expensive shops downtown.

My personal favorites are Mike's Fabric (821 S. Wall) and Moon Fabric (846 S. Wall). I make costumes, and all I have to do is hand them a picture, and they will bring me the fabric I am looking for.

Berger Specialty Beads (413 E. 8th) is also downtown, but I rarely get there, becuase they're not open on weekends.

I LOVE F&S!  While they do have some things that are very very pricey, I have also gotten beautiful silk dupionis and linens there for $10/yd and found wonderful treasures in the clearance area for even less.  I think they cover a broad range.  THey have the only silk fleece I've ever found, the largest selection of ambiance bemberg lining colors, and button wall that can take an entire visit!

I believe International SIlks & Woolens is still around in West Hollywood area, that also may be worth a visit.  In Torrance (it'll be a bit of a drive from UCLA... 20-45 min. depending on time of day/traffic) there's a huge wonderful old store, Florence Fabrics.  THey announced they were going out of business a couple mos. ago and all fabric (including many high end wools, silks, etc. like F&S) was half off... not sure what they still have left or if it's a bigger discount but it was well worth a 45 minute drive for me!Karen

I just called Florence Fabric, and they are still there. They don't know their closing date, but they said they still have lots of great merchandise. I personally love their button selection, and I'm really sad to see them go out of business.

Their address is 23104 Hawethorne Blvd., in Torrance. And their phone number is 310-375-2526.
