Fabric care

Pearl5 | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Hello everyone.  I seem to find the answers to all my questions on this forum.  I hope I’m in the correct folder here —  I have 4 yards of stretch cotton poplin that I plan to use.  However, I don’t have any laundry instructions.  Should it go in the dryer?  Will it be difficult to press after washing?  How about wrinkles?

Thanks in advance for any info.

I am hazarding a guess here but if it were mine and a cotton/lycra blend I would wash it on warm, no hesitation. Then again, I wash everything! As far as the pressing, my experience is that anything with lycra added for stretch is a p----- to iron. It loves to move as you press and hold on to the wrinkles then made. That being said, most ready to wear and fabric as well for bottomweights now is made with some stretch/lycra thrown in. Its hard to get away from it. I still prefer my natural linens and cottons. JMHO but hope it helps a little.

You really can't tell what a fabric is going to do in the laundering process until you try it, so you have a couple of options: take a sample and launder it and decide whether it works or launder the whole thing the way you plan to launder the garment and see whether it works.I used stretch cotton poplin to make slacks for my daughter, and the fabric was great washed on warm, tumbled dry on warm, immediately hung. My daughter doesn't own an iron, but these slacks always look tidy and smooth anyway!

Warm water/line dry until almost dry, then dry in dryer for about 10 minutes to soften any wrinkles.  I do this with t-shirts.  If they get completely dry on the line, then I put them in the dryer and spritz them with water.

If the fabric is a dark or bright color, then I would used cold water and wash the garment inside out.
