Fabric dye setting

barbara | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

I want to set the indigo dye and remove the charcoal odor in handmade fabric from Sapa, VietNam. I also want to set the dye in cotton fabric from Africa. I tried white viniger on the African fabric, but the fabric still bled. Suggestions? These fabrics are just too pretty to ruin! Thanks!

Try a chemical fixative, Raycafix, available from G&S Dye (mail order)in Toronto. I have used it for red and black ready-made garments and have had excellent results. I did notice a slight darkening on a maroon colour however so test first.

You can also try Retayne, which fixes dyes.  It can be found at many local quilt shops, as well as online.  I know Darhma Trading Company carries this product: http://www.darhmatrading.com/
