Fabric in the Microwave

jennys | Posted in General Discussion on

Does anyone have any information or website address pertaining to using the microwave to alter fabric ?

l had a length of plain dark red polyester velvet, which l thought was a bit boring. l remembered reading that you can heat set creases in polyester. So l wet the velvet thoroughly, tied it up tightly in twisted bundles, and cooked it in 1-3 minute bursts in the microwave until the fabric was hot. l then left it to cool down, and after unwrapping it , it was beautifully crinkled and creased velvet, and the effect is still there after machine washing the fabric.

l was interested in any other microwave ideas such as using heat sensitive dyes etc in the microwave, as in the home setting (even if it means getting another microwave ) it is easier to control heat in a mw than it is on top of the stove etc

Did your microwave smell afterwards? Just wondering. Neat idea!

No the microwave didn,t smell, but l was sitting next to it so that l didn't scorch the fabric - or set it on fire
