Fabric Sources

ecapa35 | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

I need info about sources for really up-to-date fashion fabrics (trendy bohemian looking fabrics, latest stretch knits, crochet trims, etc) in the Washington DC area (Alexandria, VA). I’ve been disappointed lately in the retail sewing stores because they just aren’t carrying any of the same styles/types of fabrics/notions that are out there in the fashionable clothing stores. They seem to be focusing more on things like quilting fabrics. Can anyone give me info about sources for these kinds of fabrics and notions for the home sewer or very small business sewer? Where can I get info about fabric fairs/expos, online sources, etc?  Thanks very much!! [email protected]

There's nothing in the area to compare with G Street Fabrics on Rockville Pike.  Personally I do not like shopping there as much now as I did when they were G Street Remnants and they were actually ON G Street, NW and sold only couturier and designer house remnants, but it is huge and has a terrific notions selection.  I've lived in the DC area all my life and I've seen the over-all selection of fabric stores really crash here.  Now everything is Hancock Fabrics, or the fabric selection in Michael's.  I remember when a family friend helped open "Stretch and Sew" near Fort Belvoir.  I assume that that is loooong gone!  House of Fine fabrics is also ancient history.  I don't think G Street has any equivilent in the area.

There is a place in Thurmont, MD (think Camp David) that I have read about.  It is a warehouse and has EVERYTHING.  I've never been there, but I'll see if I can dig up something about it.

Ahah!  I found it on the internet.  Gotta love Google.

The place in Thurmont is an upholstery and decorator fabric source called Discount Fabrics.  Here's a directory:
