My favorite is a local chain called Yardage Town. They only sell fabrics--no crafts--and the clerks are knowlegable about fabrics and patterns. The worse one local is JoAnn's. I don't know why they still have fabrics in their name as they are a craft store with some craft and quilt fabrics. And none of their employees know anything about sewing. They don't even know how to read the back of a pattern or know the 8ths of yards. At least Michaels' clerks know about their crafts supplies and can answer questions.

"I don't know why they still have fabrics in their name..."
Wow, Chris! I just heard an ad for JoAnn's on "Sewing with Nancy", and guess what?
They DON'T use either Fabrics OR Crafts anymore ~ just "JoAnn Stores"!! They still use that clunky tag-line "Experience the creativity", though ~
Sheesh ~
Well, my fliers still say JoAnn fabric and craft stores and so does the outside of the store. Haven't seen any of their TV ads. I miss the old House of Fabrics. Now that was a great fabric store chain before JoAnn's bought them out.

Local Fabric Stores in the Washington DC Area
Regarding your question about local fabric stores, we are blessed to have the national chains (JoAnn's and Hancock Fabrics) as well as some local gems. I have a couple of favorites in my area.
The Grand Dame is G Street Fabrics. Which used to be quirky store on G Street in DC. Now it's exploded into a small local chain with locations in Maryland and Virginia. You can't beat it for variety, depth, and classes.
Curran Square Fabrics in McLean has got the yummiest selection of fashion fabrics and their sales personnel has impeccable taste along with strong sewing skills.
If I'm looking for decorator fabrics, The Discount Fabric Shop in Thurmont, MD is worth the drive.
Oh and I'm originally from Los Angeles.
I used to love the Home Silk Shop, Michael Levines and a host of dinky shops in downtown LA. Still have to make a downtown run when I go home!
Finally, I must lament the demise of the fabric department in our local Walmart Stores. I cannot tell you the number of times I've run through Walmart at some ungodly hour looking for some notion or whatnot to finish something due in the morning.
Fabric stores
I wonder if Walmart carries fabric anywhere now. Here in Texas they used to have a great selection, but they closed the fabric department a few months ago at one local Walmart and I thing they must have did it every where.
I haven't been in JoAnns since they moved out my area years ago.
Many online fabric stores are great, including the one that I blog for, OnlineFabricStore.net.
Fabric Stores
I was in Walmarts in Texas and Louisiana last month and both of them had fabric departments. I really hate that Walmart corporate took it out of my stores in VA
