Fabric stores in New Dehli

SewNancy | Posted in General Discussion on

I am going to be in India in November and will be in Dehli for the first couple of days.  Anyone know of good fabric stores?  We are going on to Ahmedebad for a wedding and then probably going south, but the itinerary is not set yet.  We are also traveling through London  and will spend a few days on the way back.  Any suggestions for fabric shopping?

Not a fabric store but surely a store of fabrics...in London consider the Victoria and Albert museum to check out their fashion section. Web site http://www.vam.ac.uk/

    Hi Nancy,

I was raised in A'bad but have not been back in a decade. Both, New Delhi and A'bad are shopping paradises. Delhi is bigger and better selection, I am not sure if it is pricier too.

Connaught Place in New Delhi is the trendy and a wonderful shopping area. I have not been there in ages but hear it is still great.

In Ahmedabad, you would find a fabulous selection of silk saris, fabrics etc. Also A'bad will have good mirrorwork/embroidered fabrics as it is traditional for that part of the country. Your best bets are shops on C.G. Road/Ashram road. Old town A'bad (Ratanpole) area has lots of small shops with better prices and you could bargain too but you would have a more pleasant experience in the more modern shops on those two roads. Indian silks are a great bargain IMO. Be careful if you buy cottons. Some bright colors could run.

Save some room in your budget for a silk sari from the south. Saris there are different from the stuff in north and very beautiful too.

You probably know that Diwali (major Indian holiday) is in November this year so the stores will be full of stuff at that time.

Thankyou so much.  We are leaving here around November 20,  I am not sure exactly when Divali falls.  We were in India about 3 years ago before Divali, in October and did get pre Divali sales.  My husband is planning on stocking up on shirts again.  Our friend took him to a lovely shop.  I found the silk to be better than the cotton too.  I will definitely look for a sari in the south.

I have never been to an Indian wedding before and we are really looking foward to the experience.  In fact, I am going to wear an outfit that I made out of silk I bought the last time I was there.

      Nancy
