Fabric suggestions

stitchagain | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Know of any good reference on choosing fabrics?

I want to make a vintage pattern and don’t know what to make it out of.  It is for a sleeveless shawl coat.  The “collar” of the swing-y “vest” is “cape-like”  reaching the elbow at least.  The fabric suggestions on the old pattern are: Woolens, plain and fancy tweeds, failles, rayon, Irish linen- it has an optional lining.  I want to make it for the winter, but think the fabric choice would be critical.  I have some wool melton fabric, but that might be too heavy.

I think if I did some research on fabrics I wouldn’t necessarily have to choose one of the fabrics listed above, I could choose a modern counterpoint.

Would velveteen work for you?  Yes, I think melton would be too heavy, especially if the garment is sleeveless.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll have to look up Sandra Betzina's books.

Velveteen was accacually written in pencil by some previous owner of the pattern.  It seems a bit dressy but I don't know it that well

      Thanks

What about Sandra Betzina's books on fabric, published by Taunton?
