I would like to search old posts to see if a topic has previously been addresed, but the answer in FAQ was to do something (check some forum search box?) that I couldn’t locate.

There is a search box at the top of the almost every page under the Threads title.
Thank you. I had assumed that that search box was for the magazine, not the forums.

Keep in mind that if you use Safari as your web browser, the search button won't show at the top of the gatherings pages. So, if you don't see it, try a different browser, like Foxfire.
The box i think you mean is on the top right when you are in "gathering".
When you are on the "explore page" you can use a search to find keywords in back issues of Threads. Handy if you have back issues or are able to buy them
