I have very basic knowledge of sewing which I learned many years ago in school. I am now interested in learning fashion design, but am not sure where to begin. Can this be done with on line classes, or can this be self taught using books, DVDs, etc? Just don’t know where to begin this ‘new career’ move.

Goggle has a lot of sites for online fashion design. http://www.google.com/search?q=fashion+design&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=XGP&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&q=fashion+design+online&revid=1458869846&sa=X&ei=Rtm1TOjvG5OssAOIg-yyCA&ved=0CIQBENUCKAc&fp=9f2370386c77b788
I learned basic pattern making from the book Pattern Making by the Flat Pattern Method, 4th ed., published 40 years ago. It's now in it's 8th ed. now, I think. I also took a pattern making class at my local community college. The class used Patternmaking for Fashion Design, 4th ed. by Helen Joseph-Armstrong as the textbook. Between the 2 books, I have pretty much all the information I need.

Not sure what career you are thinking of in fashion. Yes a formal qualification is right for many people, but i also know self taught and those who have only attended evening classes who have jobs or careers in sewing. Do you want to be able to design and cut your own patterns or be a dressmaker whon uses and adapts commerical patterns. Maybe you just want to make simple kids clothes.............
