finding unusual colors of velvet(rayo…

I’m having a hard time finding velvet here in Maine. Someone told me to go to a fabric show in NY but can’t find any info on that either. I have searched the web for material but the vlevet search always comes up with the upholstering type. I use the rayon/acetate type to emboss with rubber stampsa and an iron. Can anyone give me some leads? Thanks

1 - Have you tried buying white velvet and dying it? it
isn't difficult and looks great. I do it all the time.
2 - Check the archives for a listing of fabric stores in
NYC. Someone put together a HUGE if somewhat outdated
listing of NYC stores.
3 - Rayon acetate is not a really fancy velvet (it also
should not be too pricey). It isn't too difficult to find. I
might try calling Vogue Fabrics 212-921-0016. I don't know
if they do mail order but if you order enough I'm sure they
will. I have found them pleasant. I'm not sending you to one
of the fancy fabric stores like B&J because they won't carry
what you need. I also like Liberty textile. They are very
accomidating and have been willing to do mailorder business
with me -212-780-5811.
You also may want to try Ragfinders 212-354-4111 they are a
really bizarre operation but may have exactly what you want.
When you enter their showroom the first thing you see is a
whole gym's worth of exercise equiptment. It is a strange
place but woth dealing with. They have been very nice to me
in the past when I was just start
*Hi Susan, Yes, Sarah's right, Vogue Fabrics usually has a stash of nice velvets; they definitely swatch and do mail order; they have a web site too:http://www.myvoguefabrics.comIf you want to treat yourself try Thai Silks for silk and silk/rayon velvet. I've got the swatches and the color and hand is gorgeous:http://www.thaisilks.com/Also Phoenix Textiles had a special on some velvets, brown, olive, ruby. In cotton. I thought they looked pretty short-napped, more like a velveteen. You'll have to dig for it though, this is a huge site:http://st6.yahoo.com/phoenixtextiles/--lin
