Finishing Armholes on Sleeveless Denim Dress

aspiretodesign | Posted in Teach Yourself To Sew on

What would be the best way to finish the armholes on a sleeveless denim dress? I don’t want to line it, because you don’t see lined denim dresses. I want my finished project to look professional. 🙂

Just because you "don't see them" does not mean you cannot do it.   There is a series on It's Sew Easy by Angela Wolf that addresses finishing sleeveless dresses that may help you.

I know...I just didn't want the extra layer of a lining on a denim garment. :) Thanks for replying. I can not find that series - do you have a link? Thanks again!

That should have been "on TV"  There is also a website  - http://www.itsseweasytv.com/index.htm  See series 600 "Little Black Dress" as it addresses several fabrics and styles.

You could make traditional facings, but instead of using denim, use something much lighter in weight. For example, try using lightweight cotton or silk that wouldn't provide extra bulk. You could use the same color, a contrasting color, or even a print.

You could also cut bias strips of denim or other lightweight fabrics. Stitch them to the armhole, turn and press to the inside, then topstitch the outside using the same style of topstitching as on other parts of the garment  (if there is other topstitching on the garment).

The key is using lighter weight fabrics on the inside to avoid the extra bulk of denim.
