First Machine

Mattell | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

Hello Seamstresses!

I have decided to purchase my first sewing machine. I have had a hard time finding some great common sense reviews. My local fabric shops haven’t been able to offer much help, and I don’t want to waste a professionals time in there shop. They would want to do the work. I am a project type person with the machine. It will be used maybe once a month. I need to be able to sew leather, and heavier fabrics from Sunbrella. I have an interest to work with some micro fiber products as well. The projects coming up are some covers for a boat, cushions for some chairs I made, a sectional couch, panels for a custom bed.

I don’t have only used my mother’s machine for hemming and a small amount of basic pattern work so it will be a learning curve. LOL. Is there a machine that can do all of these things? Thank you for any help.

It sounds like you need an industrial sewing machine.  Here is a site that has a variety of brands: http://www.allbrands.com/products/abc0277.html

You can see on line reviews by owners of all different brands of machines at PatternReview.com. When on the site just click on reviews for machines and sergers on the left side of the page then there is a list of all the brands at the top of the page and just click on the brand you wish to check out. You might wish to check on Pfaff machines with the dual feed since you will be sewing different weights of fabrics but many machines have the capablility of sewing leather. If you will be sewing lots of leather you might want an industrial type of machine and there are some that are less expensive than others. You can also post questions on the PR site as you can here because the site has many discussion threads. I hope you find a machine for your needs.
