Sounds a bit weird, but check out Crib Sheet instructions on Google.  There are several that give good basic instructions on making fitted sheets, and how to measure the mattress for the best fit.  Then measure your mattress, and figure the amount of yardage you need.  Top sheets are often big enough to convert.

      fitted bottom sheets

I've done this for a long time so I endorse this idea.  I use a fitted sheet to cover my bottom mattress and find that this is a lot cleaner and less stuffier than using a ruffled cover for the bottom boxspring.  to make one, top or bottom, i find that for a queen size mattress, i purchase double the yardage.  I cut the fabric in "half" lengthwise and then with one of these pieces cut it in half width wise.  I sew two lengths attaching with the widest piece of the fabric being used for overtop of the mattress and the shorter pieces to cover the sides.  This piece covers the mattress like a tablecloth and you can fix your bedding like a flat sheet or cut a square shape off of all four of your corners and sew the two ends of the cut area together  for a fitted mattress.  I prefer to not cut the squares and to fit a flat sheet over top of a mattress and boxspring because flatsheets are mult ifunctional and can also be used as top sheets. there is an artice like this and this article is found at fabric-stores.com, who is one of my favourite merchants when i purchase linen. So I really reendorse threadkoe's idea above!!!

          measuring for fabric

remember to measure the entire length of your mattress including the both ends -  measure one end, measure across the  mattress length - measure down the other end.
