how can I get pants to fit right in the legs without looking like a triangle? I need a 16 for the waist and hips but a 12 for the thighs. How do I fix this problem. Why do pattern makers assume that if you wear a 16 you have large legs? carol

I would think the easiest solution is to choose a pant that has a drawstring waist. Some patterns (Vogue) have drawstring pants with two optional leg sizes - one full, one less full. This might do the trick.
Lucky you! I actually have the thighs to fit those legs! It seems like simply slimming down your patterns in that area should do the trick-just do it gradually to lessen the "triangular" effect. Taking in at the inner thigh and crotch point may help if your measurements will allow. Style and fabric choices will make subtle differences, too. Try draping yourself in front of the mirror to get some ideas. have you done a basic pant fit muslin? That way you won't be cutting into your favorite stuff til ready!
