Good Morning!
I have a question that so far I am unsuccessful in finding the answer. The question is (and does anyone know) Why is a French Seam called a French Seam? I know that another name for it is an Enclosed Seam, or English (England) Seam. This question is just driving me crazy. LOL – If any one knows or knows how I can find out the answer – PLEASE – let me know. I have asked “Martha’s Sewing Room”, Ask.com and several other sites. The only answer that I have received is that it is a good question.
Please let me know!
Thanks!
John

I answered your posting on another sewing site but since then have been thinking about my answer that "couture sewing=French origins=French seams". No doubt this type of seam was known well before the French got into the couture business! I think that perhaps the couture business just adapted the seam as being so practical and elegant and named it for themselves!A study of the techniques of that time may produce an answer for you. I have never heard of it being called an English Seam.
Thanks You're the only one that has even come close to answering my question! It makes sense to me. I just had no clue as to why it was named that. Thanks for your help and I'll check out your other answer also.
