I just bought a new skirt pattern that has no pattern piece for a facing at the waist. The instructions say to use a length of grossgrain ribbon instead. Is this a new trend? Will it work without creating a ridge along the waist? Anybody tried this?

I’ve just discovered this discussion group and its fantastic. Hope to hear from someone!

It's actually a very old technique... I have a collection of vintage couture garments, many of which incorporate this technique. It can actually be less bulky, especially if you are sewing heavier wools.
