halter-style swimsuit with bra cups?

nmog | Posted in General Discussion on

Hi all. I’ve got another swimsuit discussion – must be the time of year!
I would like to make a halter-style swimsuit (kwik Sew 3062), but I need a lot of support for my DD+ bust. I have been looking for a source to buy bra cups that size, but haven’t been able to find any. As a result, I bought a foam bra at La Senza and I’m going to use the cups and/or underwire. The suit won’t get lots of use, so I’m hoping the bra cups work.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to insert the cups into the halter top? I’m going to overlap the pattern pieces at front so I don’t show as much cleavage. Should I sew a lining and attach the cups to that? I’m also wondering if my neck will become uncomfortable if the halter is tight. I’m looking for design suggestions to perhaps take some strain off my neck. Could I make the tie attach to the back of the suit vertically, and add a horizontal piece between my shoulder blades for support (like a capital H)?

With all these questions, maybe I should make the standard tank! LOL

Thanks for the help.
Nicole

You re right in that there will be plenty of strain on the halter straps. The straps are what is holding all the bust weight, not the cups. They are only there for a little shaping. Are the cups part of an actual bra? If they are, they could possibly just be sewn into the side seam. Otherwise the lining idea may be your solution. Nice to know it's warm enough some place to swim.

    Hi

Have you tried Bramakers?  They mail order out of Canada and have all the supplies needed to make lingerie, swimsuits undies etc. including fabrics and findings for those with an allergy to latex.  They have swim cup foam (item F933  $30/m Canadian) the description reads "If you are larger than a C cup you know the frustration of trying to buy swim cups.  Make your own perfect fitting swim cups from your bra pattern and have it fit your swimsuit.  No more cups that sag, droop or not quite cover!.........Chlorine resistant. quick drying.........."

And no, I am not employed by them, just a very satisfied customer.

    Their website is http://www.bramakers.com
