I have a new Bernina Artista 165 with embroidery module. I’ve done free motion embroidery in the past but went ahead and bought the embroidery module thinking I might like to try machine embroidery in the future. Once I tried embroidery with the module, I was hooked and really love it. I’d like to eventually be able to download designs off the internet, but I’m uncertain what extra goodies I’d need so my machine could talk with my computer. There’s so many things advertised for downloading, I’m confused as to what I actually do need. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a Bernina Artista 170 with the embroidery module, which I think is just about the same.
I hook my machine to the computer and download directly. I don't have a card reader or any 'boxes' and do not intend to buy any. I store my designs on the hard disc of the workstation and back up occasionally onto a CD. It works fine, but a laptop would be more convenient than carting the sewing machine into our home office.
I guess that the software that came with your machine will only let you use .art designs. These are becoming more common, but I found I was craving the Artista embroidery software that lets you read other formats and edit designs (combining several, rotating, flipping, resizing etc.). I now have it and am studying the newly released V4. to see whether it would be worth upgrading.
Happy embroidering!
Ghillie
