I am sewing a ruffle on the bottom of a skirt. Well, it’s a good 3″ wide trim @ the bottom. It’s a cotton interlock fabric. Well, I’ve finished everything on the skirt but the hem & I’ve had to rip it out 2x now!
The first time it puckered so I rethread the machine & played with the tension, the width & length of the stitches. The second time it didn’t pucker but when I tried it on it looked really stiff & didn’t hang correctly.
It’s such a cute skirt & I’m almost done but I can’t get this right. Please help me somebody.
thank you,
Samantha

Samantha, I am assuming from the description that the skirt is wrippling and not the ruffle. In that case you need to stabilize the knit of the skirt, if only while sewing on. One way to do this is to genlty pin on some tear away stabilizer on the wrong side of the skirt hem without stretching it. It may take a bit to do this neatly. (adding machine paper can also be used.) Then "baste" the ruffle in place and sew on using a zigzag or multiple zigzag stitch with a walking foot. Then GENTLY tear away the stabilizer. A permanent stabilizer will give a stiff finish. You possibly could use seams great as a stablizer, but experiment. My machine has a specail foot tension setting for knits or slippery fabrics and it greatly helps with knits. See if yours has one.
