hemming/(gluing?) suede pants

I am hemming a pair of dreamy-soft suede pants. The store where i bought them recommended going to a tailor who would cut and glue the bottom hems. the tailors here aren’t very sophisticated and i don’t want them to experiment on my pants with the wrong glue that would be too stiff and show through. What kind of glue would i use and what is the technique? what’s with the rubber mallet? Rubber cement, contact cement or jeans mender? which is better (what is jeans mender)? Are these glues dry-cleanable? is there an alternative to dry cleaning that will bbe less expensive/chemicals and how do i keep from bagging out the knees?

so many questions…i know, but you sound like the right person to ask!

thanks for any help!

    Leeanne,

Jeans Mender may be the easiest for you to use. It is cheap enough and is available at Farm and Fleet stores and that type. You can spread the jeans mender glue on with your fingers. Simply apply the glue, spread it out, fold up the hem and finger press it together. You do not need a rubber mallet unless you are using a really stiff type of leather or suede.

For your soft suede pants use only a small amount of glue the glue, don't over glue it.

Bagging at the knees? Are your pants lined? They need to be lined. Proper lining will take care of the bagging. And they will feel and fit so much better with a lining in them. If they did not come with lining you can easily add your own. Write back on Gatherings if you need help in that area.

    Save your scraps.
