How can you wash Rayon safely?

AZ | Posted in The Archives on

I just bought a rayon dress and I need to wash it. There is a stain I need to get out, but I need the dress for tonight. Any ideas?

I think it depends on the Rayon. I have safely washed woven rayon with a "cottony " feel for years in my machine. If you want the surface to stay smooth , hand wash in cool water, roll the dress in a towel to absorb most of the moisture and hang on a padded hanger.

I have been less sucessful with rayon knits. I have a lovely Eileen Fisher sleeveless black dress that I nearly ruined by hand washing (AAARRRGGGHHH!!!). It shrank dramatically. Actually, I salvaged it with careful blocking and much cursing.

My daughter and I have been machine washing our rayon/lycra pants and hanging them to dry - to no ill effect.

Often snapping the garment into shape while it is still damp works wonders, as it does with hand washing silks.

Good luck! I know my advice is a day late, but maybe it can save you future drycleaning bills.
