How do I adapt a bra with velcro?

Shawna_Thompson | Posted in The Archives on

Hello, I am an occupational therapist working with a woman who has had a severe stroke. She is unable to use her left hand. She’s having such a struggle putting on her bra, and this is a very important thing for her to do independently. I would like to learn a good way to adapt a bra to be a front closing one with Velcro. I’m not a sewer, so I’m hoping someone’s expertise and creativity out there can help me.
Thank you,
Shawna Thompson, OTR

I had surgery on my hand once, and I remember how difficult one-handed bra wearing was. I think you will have to find a sewer as the self adhesive type of Velcro is not reliable.

I would start with a front closing bra and replace one half of the closure with a ring or loop of some sort. I would replace the other half with a piece of tape or ribbon, with one piece of hook and one piece of loop Velcro attached to it, fairly close together and in just the right places. The tape would then be threaded through the loop, pulled up taught, and the two pieces of the Velcro squished together. Does that make sense? It is similar to the way a lot of sandals do up.

Depending on the lady's figure, she might prefer to leave the ribbon threaded, put the loosened bra on over her head and then pull it up. She may be able to do this behind her back, with a back closing bra if she prefers. In fact that could work better as there is more room for a closure across the back.

*Here is a page showing a variety of Closures for front opening bras. Don't know if these will help...http://www.sewsassy.com/BraProducts/Closures.html
