How to clean/remove musty smell from iron?

Someone inadvertently left water in an iron I like to use. The iron sat for weeks like that, and it has a musty smell now. When I tried to use it, I discovered the problem because the steam smelled moldy. I immediately didn’t want to use the iron on my project or breathe the steam.
I hate to just toss the iron, which otherwise seems to work fine. Does anyone know of anything I could put through the iron to wipe out the mold cells? I’ve seen products for cleaning/descaling coffee pots and wondered if one of those would work. Or vinegar?

To remove the musty odor (more than likely mold and mildew formed in the water reservoir), heat some distilled white vinegar in the microwave. Empty any water from the water reservoir. Fill the reservoir with the hot vinegar. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes or so; then empty out the vinegar. Flush the reservoir several times with distilled water. This should take care of the problem....If not, repeat!
I found this online and it concurs with what I would do for the problem. hope it helps.
