HI,
I bought a silk tapestry years ago – thousand threads to an inch, with 2 inch fringes. The size is roughly 3×4 feet. I would like to hang it but I’m unsure what to do about the fringes on either end. I know one can sew on a pocket on the back to hang on a rod – but what to do about the fringes. anyone have a solution? thanks much.

Depending on what the tapestry looks like you could hang the tapestry vertically rather than horizontally and let the fringes at the top hang over the back of the tapestry. The other option is to hand stitch a piece of fabric onto the back of the tapestry catching the fringes inbetween the fabric and the rug or you could just let the fringes hang free at the edges. If you hang it so that it hangs a couple inches away from the wall so that it's not laying right against it the fringes could be brushed towards the back of the hanging.
This sounds like something that you really want to be very careful with. I would ask the assistance of a museum that deals with conservation of fabrics how best to mount this tapestry. They might even be able to give you some ideas that you might not have considered.

If the tapestry is valuable then another option might be to check with a oriental rug store or a better carpet store that deals in high end orientals or tapestry's. They may be able to actually mount it for you or guide you on the best way to do it without damaging the rug.
Thank you both for taking the time with your answers, Sue and Shelley. Will look into it.

I know that this is not a solution to your 'problem' however this site might give you a little insight into problems relating to antique textiles, of which most of have little knowledge.
