how to insert elastic in lycra fabrics l

rollemsewing | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Can anyone offer suggestions on how i can insert elastic in a pair of lyra pants like the ready to wear garments that are bought out of department stores.  i usually just  stitched the ends of the elastic and turn down the casing and stitch the elastic in that way, but i will have to stitch in the ditch on the seams to keeps the elastic from turning over everytime you pull on the pants.

There are a variety of ways to accomplish this depending on the finished appearance you want. If you have a serger you can serge the elastic to the inside of the very top edge and then fold it down and topstitch in place,. This isn't a good method to use if you think you will ever have to replace the elastic. You could also zig zag the elastic to the garment ( with the same replacement headaches.) Having it loose in the casing and topstitching in the side seams has the advantage of allowing the elastic stretch to fit where it needs to be on your body and not just at the quartermarks. Before stitching in the ditch, try it on, adjust the seams and the elastic so they are straight and then pin them in place so you can stitch them where they need to be
