Inspired by Threads Challenge

Bernice | Posted in General Discussion on

I thought I had finally finished up the detail/ideas I had and was ready to sew a possible entry in the Inspired by Threads contest… then in rereading the rules I realized the issues from which inspiration is derived goes through 114 – I thought that was the last one but as it turns out 114 isn’t even out yet and the deadline’s in 30 days!  Are we really supposed to be in that big a crunch if we hold out until we see what’s in 114 or are you really not expecting much contribution from that issue?  Seems like the due dates or issues we’re to use should be adjusted so they’re not almost simultaneous!

It is a crunch, isn't it?  According to my production schedule, today is the "earliest in-home" date for issue 114, although what that means is that the issue will probably arrive in stores anywhere from today through next week, and possibly later to subscribers, depending on where they live relative to our printer/shipper, and of course the holiday weekend...So there's still a chance that you and others will receive your magazine in time to use it for inspiration.

However, we hope there was enough in previous issues to get you started, and that even if you don't get 114 in time for the challenge, you'll try out some of the techniques in other sewing projects. There are some really nice things in this issue! But I always think that when the newest issue arrives. My list of "can't wait to try it" ideas is really, really long at this point. I really need to retire or something so I can actually find time to do it all!

Do you REALLY think you'll have the time for everything on the list when you retire????? After all, look what happened to rjf.....she got a book for Christmas and has spent the past five months wrapping temari ;-)

Oh, I probably won't have time for all that stuff when I retire, but it's fun to dream...and believe me, I never expected rjf to become such a temari fiend when I gave her that book last Christmas (although I'm not surprised, either).

Eek! Well, hopefully I won't find anything that makes me want to take a completely different direction though I'm now wondering if I can come close to deadline anyway as I just got some new work commitments.   I went to the website and it says the new (#114) issue is on sale June 30, went to two bookstores and a Joann's and none have it yet, thought I could at least flip through before it arrives in the mailbox. The bookstores said they don't even have it in.  :-(

BTW, after my grandmother retired we had to start making appointments months in advance to get together with her...  ;-)

            Hi, Bernice,

I heard from someone over the weekend who had received her copy of No. 114, in Georgia, so hopefully there will be one in your future soon, too.  And I hope that you do submit an entry. The "Inspired" challenge is one of our favorites; it's so much fun to see all the entries.

For your information, and for anyone else planning submit an entry, please take a look at http://www.americansewingexpo.com, where Janet Pray has written up some very helpful guidelines for photographing your garments. Since our first pass of judging is based on photographs only, it's worthwhile to be sure you send in pictures that show your work to best advantage.

Perhaps it's right in front of me and I'm missing it, but when I go to the link for the American Sewing Expo and read the contests sections, the link they provide takes me back to the Taunton site and description of the challenge, or I can click to get to the entry form... but somehow I'm not finding Janet's helpful tips on photographing on the sewing expo site - could you please be a little more specific as to where on the site we might find them? Thanks!Karen

Wow! That is buried, but this link should take you there:

            http://www.americansewingexpo.com/as_images/Swatches%20March%2004.pdf

If you go to the Expo's site, scan down the left side and click on "Newsletter," then on Mar 2004 Swatches. The article is called "Get your foot in the door."

Sorry I didn't give clear directions the first time--I thought it was on the home page.

And I'm afraid there are months (years?) to go before I get over this obsession.   rjf

LOL! I'm in awe of what you've been able to accomplish in such a short time with the temari. And I'm actively NOT looking to add another hobby to fill up my "spare" time. I can only imagine what awaits at retirement......
