Interlining a jacket

Sew1 | Posted in General Discussion on

I am sewing a wool jacket and would like to interline it (as per the recent article in Threads).  Do I also use interfacing where the pattern recommends it?  Or does the interlining take the place of the interfacing?

Thanks for any help.

Depends on the body of the fabric, but I use the fusible on the interlining, that way it doesn't show through or bubble on the fashion fabric.  If the interlining isn't going to show you can use sheets, table cloths, outgrown shirts... or consider using a nice seam allowance finish and don't line at all.

I agree.  Depends on the top (fashion) fabric.  When I interface and underline a garment, I usually interface the top fabric then underline it.  I like the support and structure given by the interfacing to the top fabric.  Very silky or soft, drapey fabrics are the exception, however.

Hi. Do you get the Threads Newsletter email? If so, this week's one is on just the subject you were asking about. I can't work out how to forward it to you as I've no email address, but if you haven't already got it, it would be worth your chasing it up. This address is given - you could try it and see if it helps!

      Moira,

Thanks for the headsup about the e-newsletter.  I just subscribed and hopefully I will get the issue you referenced.
